January 16, 2025
b. 1934 d. 2025
UTFA President (1981 - 1983)
Professor Harvey L. Dyck joined the University's Department of History in 1966, and retired in 1997 after 31 years of service. Since 1989, he served as the Director of a research program at the Centre for Russian and East European Studies, now known as the Munk School of Global Affairs.
Harvey became actively involved in faculty negotiations and was UTFA President from 1981-1993. During his tenure, he successfully negotiated the record-setting Burkett Award (June 3, 1982) for faculty and library members, which provided faculty with a landmark salary increase. Harvey remained an engaged member of UTFA throughout his retirement until his passing.
A skilled negotiator, his ability to remain steadfast against opposition earned him the respect of his peers. In addition to his role as a negotiator, Harvey significantly influenced the internal dynamics of the UTFA, playing a crucial role in addressing the complex political and organizational challenges faced by the association. His legacy embodies principled leadership, a strong belief in solidarity, and a commitment to improving academic institutions.
We extend our condolences to Harvey’s family and all who knew and worked with him in his department and at UTFA. The Association appreciates Harvey’s many years of dedicated service on behalf of our membership.
Harvey’s family has placed an obituary and guestbook here. A service took place on January 18, 2025 at the Toronto United Mennonite Church.
