Prof. Homa Hoodfar (Concordia) teaches and researches development, culture and gender in the Middle East. While visiting her home country of Iran in 2016, she was arrested and held in solitary confinement for 112 days under threat of indefinite imprisonment while being denied essential medicine. She was released on Sept. 26, 2016.
Prof. Payam Akhavan (McGill) teaches international criminal law and dispute settlement, human rights and cultural pluralism. Having appeared as counsel and advocate in leading cases before the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court and the Permanent Court of Arbitration, in 2016 he was appointed a Member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague.
